Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 8:1-22
SERMON NOTES
WHO IS THE KING OF ISRAEL?
1 Samuel 8:1-22; Luke 19:11-27
– like David’s plan for a temple, in that God overrules for good.
1. Disobedience invariably appears reasonable.
– the three reasons given for asking for a king seem reasonable:
Samuel’s sons are corrupt (8:1-5); a king could provide greater military security (8:20); and Israel would be like the Gentile nations (8:5, 20)
– this is a rejection of God (8:7; Judges 8:22-23; Luke 19:14)
2. The temptations of power.
– 8:10-18; note the number of times he says ‘take’; see too Deut.17:14-20
– hence Psalm 118:8-9; 146:3
– so it happened (1 Kings 5:13-16; 12:4).
3. God overrules evil for good.
– see too 2 Sam.7:1-7 for the temple
– 2 Sam.7:12-13, 16 – the human kings fail but the divine king is forever.
