SERMON NOTES
DAVID JUSTIFIED BY FAITH
(Romans 4:6-8)
– Abraham was the father of faith (4:11-12, 16) but David was the father (ancestor) of the Messiah
1. David is saved as Abraham was – by the righteousness of Another.
– 4:6 begins with ‘just as’ i.e. David is like Abraham
– David ‘says’ (present tense)
2. God credits righteousness apart from works.
– 4:6; Christians are ‘clothed in righteousness divine’ (Charles Wesley)
– 2 Cor.5:19-21 is both negative and positive
– Martin Luther: ‘Lord Jesus! You are my righteousness, but I am Your sin.’
3. God forgives, covers, and does not impute sin.
– 4:7-8, from Psalm 32:1-2
– David had sinned and was worthy of death (Ex.21:12-14; Deut.22:22)
– Zinzendorf: This only then shall be my plea:
Jesus has lived and died for me.
