A LACK OF GODLY DISCIPLINE
1 Samuel 2:11-26; 1 Samuel 3:10-14; 4:12-22
– children are in the covenant (Acts 2:39) but that does not of itself save them (Ezek.18:5, 9-10, 13-14, 17)
1. The bane of a corrupt clergy.
– 2:12-22; they were greedy and immoral thugs
– only the breast and the right thigh of the sacrifice belonged to the priest (Lev.7:29-34)
2. The sin of ineffectual discipline.
– 2:22-25; Eli seems godly himself (2:27, 34; 3:16-18)
– But God has a contention with him (3:13; see 1 Kings 1:5-6)
– Dietrich Bonhoeffer: ‘Most parents today are too spineless.’ Dale Ralph Davis refers to ‘a gutless compassion’.
– corrupt priests ought to be removed, or God will do it (2:34-35)
3. The just judgment of God.
– 4:10-22; the result is Ichabod; Rev.2:5.
