SERMON NOTES
A GODLY WOMAN’S PRAYER, PART 1
1 Samuel 1:21-2:10; Luke 1:46-56
– an illustration of Psalm 116:1-2
1. We are to fulfil our vows.
– 1:21-23; the husband could undo this in some circumstances (Num.30:13), but Elkanah does not
– 1:24-28; note Deut.23:21-23
– Duty to God should override concepts of short-term happiness
2. We are to rejoice in the Lord.
– 2:1; Geerhardus Vos calls it a ‘prayer-song’
– like Mary in Luke 1:46-47
– more extreme example in Jeremiah 15:15-21
3. We must remind ourselves of who God is.
– 2:2-3; she begins with God, as does David (1 Chron.29:10-12) and Solomon (2 Chron.6:14, 18)
– God is unique; He is holy; He is our strength (note Deut.32:4, 15, 31); He is all-knowing; and He is the judge of all (Dan.5:27)
