SERMON NOTES
CHERUBIM AND SERAPHIM
Isaiah 6:1-13 ; Revelation 4:1-11
Cherubim and seraphim must be angels.
1. They reveal the holiness of God.
– Gen.3:24; sculptured cherubim are placed over the mercy seat (Ex.37:1, 7-9)
– Isaiah 6:1-4; seraphim are the ‘burning ones’
2. They reveal the forgiveness of God.
– Isa.6:5-7; for Isaiah’s response, note Eph.3:8
– The Holy Spirit is different in that He indwells Christians (John 14:17), He convicts of sin (John 16:8), He is everywhere at the same time (Ps.139:7), and He knows all things (compare 1 Cor.12:11 to 1 Pet.1:12)
– the seraph shows God’s forgiveness to Isaiah in a kind of sacrament
3. They lead the worship of God in heaven.
– Rev.4:6-11; very like Isaiah 6
– they are not worshipped – we do not dig up the blood of saints to kiss. They lead all in the worship of God alone.
