Peter Barnes | Romans 2:12-16
SERMON NOTES
GOD’S LAW IN EVERY HEART
(Romans 2:12-16)
1. We are judged with or without God’s written law.
– 2:12, 16; ‘my gospel’ (v.16) includes bad news!
– this refers to Jews and Gentiles
2. What matters is not possessing God’s law but obeying it.
– 2:13; note Lev.18:5; Rom.10:5
3. God’s law is written on our hearts.
– 2:14-15; note Rom.4:15
– the Gentiles have God’s law written on their hearts, but not in the sense of Jeremiah 31:33
– there is an implied standard in Amos 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 13; Calvin says that Gentiles have ‘some seeds of justice implanted in their nature.
– this is referring to individual acts, not to the overall judgment. It goes both ways (see Amos 1 and also Luke 6:33; Acts 28:1-2)
– Psalm 139:23-24
