SERMON NOTES
THE DEATH OF A NATION
Hosea 13:1-16; 1 Corinthians 15:50-58
Edward Gibbon found five characteristics of the Roman Empire in its death throes:
(a) a mounting love of show and luxury;
(b) a widening gap between rich and poor;
(c) an obsession with sex;
(d) freakishness in the arts, masquerading as originality;
(e) an increased desire to live off the state.
1. The wages of sin is death.
– Rom.6:23a; Hos. 3:1-3
– God’s care for Israel (13:4-5; Deut.32:12), but in 13:7-8 God is the judge
– terrible judgment in 13:15-16 and their kings will not save them (13:9-11)
2. How death comes about.
– 13:6; the outworking takes time (note Gen.2:16-17)
– Deut.8:10-14; Deut.32:15; it is a drift (Heb.2:1)
3. Only God can raise the dead.
– 13:14; referred to in 1 Cor.15:54-55; either judgment forever (John 3:36) or life forever (John 10:10)
