Peter Barnes | John 2:1-11
SERMON NOTES
THE PURPOSE OF THE MIRACLES
(John 2:1-11)
– Jesus’ words and deeds go together; Thomas Jefferson wrote a foolish book called The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, where he eliminated all the miracles. But ‘I am the resurrection and the life’ goes with John 20, Jesus’ own resurrection.
1. His miracles showed His glory.
– John 2:11; glory is associated with heaven (Luke 2:9)
– glory came to earth in Christ Jesus (John 1:14; 2 Cor.4:6)
2. His miracles are signs of His authority to bless and to judge.
– Matt.11:2-6, pointing to Isaiah 35; the miracles show that Jesus is the Messiah; this proof is very strong (John 15:24)
– for judgment in Mark 11:12-14
– for blessing in Mark 2:9-11
3. His miracles show that He is the Christ, the Son of God.
– John 20:30-31
