SERMON NOTES
BRINGING THE GOSPEL TO THE GENTILES
Romans 1:5-7
1. Paul’s mission to all the Gentiles
– 1:5. Paul was saved in order to be the apostle to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:15-16; 2:7).
– We know how far Paul had travelled (15:18-19; Illyricum is north of Greece), and we know where he wanted to go (15:28); Acts 9:15-16.
2. What it means to be Christian.
(a) they may come from any nation.
It is for all nations, including Saudi Arabia and North Korea.
(b) they obey the demand to have faith.
Verse 5 speaks literally of ‘the obedience of faith’. Martyn Lloyd-Jones: ‘I am increasingly convinced that all our troubles arise from the fact that the gospel is not being preached in this way.’
– Rom. 6:17; 10:16; 15:18; 16:26
(c) they are called by God.
Verse 6 says Christians are called to Jesus Christ, and verse 7 says that they are called to be saints. A Christian is one who has called upon the Lord Jesus Christ (10:13), but God calls first.
(d) they are loved by God.
– 1:7.
3. The blessing of grace and peace.
