Peter Barnes | Hosea 2:2-13
SERMON NOTES
THE UNFAITHFUL LOVER
Hosea 2:2-13; 2 Timothy 2:1-13
Calvin says that this shows that we need to be reproved very often.
1. God warns us to repent.
– 2:2; a divorce is threatened (Isa.50:1; Jer.3:8)
– 2:4-5; Israel is chasing after the Baal worship
2. God chastens us.
– 2:3; death for literal and spiritual adultery (Lev.20:10); God chastens out of His love (Prov.3:11-12; Rev.3:19)
– ‘God’s megaphone’ (C. S. Lewis); 2:9-13
3. Other refuge have we none.
– 2:6-7; this looks promising, like Luke 15:17-18; but it is like the shallow repentance in Hosea 6:1-4
– ‘sorry’ followed by nothing; see 2:8
– Deut.8:10-20
Other refuge have I none;/ Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;/ Leave, ah! leave me not alone,/ Still support and comfort me (Charles Wesley).
