Peter Barnes | Hosea 1:1-2:1
SERMON NOTES
NO HOME SWEET HOME
Hosea 1:1-2:1; Romans 9:14-29
James Montgomery Boice called this ‘the second greatest story in the Bible’. ‘Hosea’ means ‘He saves’. Israel is God’s wayward bride (cf. Isa.54:5; Jer.31:32; Eph.5:25; Rev.19:7-9)
– about 750 B.C.
1. Obeying God’s strange commands.
– 1:2-3a; Calvin thought this must have been a vision, not a reality; but Hosea was called to illustrate God’s relationship with Israel
– unlike Isaiah in Isa.8:3, Jeremiah in Jer.16:1-2; and Ezekiel in Ezek.24:15-18
2. God chastens disobedient Israel.
– 1:3b-9; Hosea has three children, all with ominous names; the covenant of Ex.6:7 is reversed.
3. God promises a greater Israel.
– 1:10-2:1; see Gen.32:12; this greater Israel will include the Gentiles (see Rom.9:24-26, which also includes Hos.2:23
– see Amos 9:11-12 in Acts 15:13-18; ‘we are the circumcision’ (Phil3:3).
