1 Kings: Lifting up the Downcast: Dealing with Depression – Coming off a High

Peter Barnes | 1 Kings 19:1-21

SERMON NOTES
COMING  OFF  A  HIGH
1 Kings 19:1-21;  Matthew 11:1-19

– danger  after  an  intense  experience

1. Signs  of  depression

(a)  fear

– 19:1-3.  When  John  Chrysostom  was  threatened  by  the  empress  Eudoxia  in  the  early  fifth  century,  he  replied:  ‘Go  tell  her  I  fear  nothing  but  sin.’

(b)  a  death  wish

– 19:4,  like  Job,  Jonah  and  Jeremiah  at  certain  times.

(c)  a  jaundiced  view  of  life

– 19:10, 14;  it  is  the  right  kind  of  jealousy  (Ex.  20:4-5),  but  he  neglects  that  God  has  preserved  7,000  men  (19:18).

2. God’s  remedies

(a)  He  feeds  Elijah

– 19:5-8. Scripture  is  both  spiritual  (Matt.6:33; 16:26)  and  physical  (1 John 3:17;  Mark 6:31).

(b)  He  rebukes  Elijah

– 19:9, 11-13;  like  Gen.3:9;  see   Ps.27:13-14.
