Peter Barnes | 1 John 5:6-12
SERMON NOTES
TESTIMONY TO THE SON
Deuteronomy 19:15-21; 1 John 5:6-12
1. The water, the blood, and the Spirit testify of Christ.
– 5:6-8; need for witnesses (Deut.19:15)
– water is probably Jesus’ baptism, and blood is His death
– note the witness to Christ by the Father (John 5:32, 37), the Spirit (John 15:26), John the Baptist (John 5:33), Christ’s own works (John 5:36; 10:25), the Scriptures (John 5:39), the disciples (John 15:27), and the crowds (John 12:17).
His Spirit answers to the blood,
And tells me I am born of God (Charles Wesley)
2. We must respond to this testimony.
– 5:9-10; see Matt.3:16-17; 17:5; 1 Cor.15:6
– Douglas Wilson to Christopher Hitchens: ‘There are two tenets of atheism. One, there is no God. Two, I hate him.’
3. God’s concluding testimony – this is life or death.
– 5:11-12; John 3:18
