Peter Barnes | 1 John 2:28-3:3
SERMON NOTES
WE WILL BE LIKE HIM
Deuteronomy 7:1-11; 1 John 2:28-3:3
– the Antichrist is coming (2:18), so is the Christ (2:28); James Montgomery Boice says that the second coming is mentioned 318 times in the New Testament.
1. The Christian marvels at God’s grace.
– 3:1 – like John Newton’s Amazing Grace; the world does not recognise Christ (John 1:10).
– John Newton: ‘If I ever reach heaven I expect to find three wonders there: first, to meet some I had not thought to see there; second, to miss some I had thought to meet there; and third, the greatest wonder of all, to find myself there.’
2. The Christian is sustained by the hope of Christ’s coming.
– 3:2; we cannot see God and live (Ex.33:20) but we can only live by seeing Christ
– like Him in body (Phil.3:20-21); and without sin; Rev.19:7-8.
3. The Christian does righteousness.
– 2:29; Rev.6:15-17; 1 John 3:3
– Second Coming comforts (John 14:1-3); but it is also an incentive to holiness (1 Pet. 1:13; James 5:8).
