Moses’ Faith in Action (Hebrews 11:27-29)

In verses 24-26 the focus is more on the decisive shift in Moses’ thinking, but in verses 27-29 the focus is more on what he did as a result of that faith.

  1. Faith sees Him who is invisible.
    • 11:27. Moses did fear Pharaoh in Exodus 2:14-15. But this probably refers to the time when Moses had to stand up to Pharaoh – Ex.10:28-29; 14:10-13.
    • faith is a kind of spiritual sight. Many saw Christ with their eyes, but not spiritually – John 6:36, 40. Most Christians even in the first century had not physically seen Christ – 1 Peter 1:8. But by faith we see Him – Col.1:15a.
  2. Faith keeps the covenant signs.
    • 11:28. This is referring to the strange commands of the Passover – Ex.12:21-24, 28.
    • John Chrysostom says that now the blood is sprinkled on our souls.
  3. Faith brings salvation, unbelief brings judgment.
    • 11:29. This was an act of faith on Moses’ part – Ex.14:13-16, 21-22. But an act of presumption on the part of the Egyptians – Ex.14:23, 27-28, 30-31. J. A. Bengel: ‘When two do the same thing, it is not the same thing.’ Faith is the difference between salvation and judgment.
