The Cost of Redemption (Hosea 3:1-5)

Hosea split into two different yet complementary sections

Claim that the Old Testament had come true in Jesus Christ. (Luke 4:18-21, Psalms, Ephesians). There are 300 prophecies from theh Old Testament pointing to Christ.

  1. A Faithless bride and a Faithful bridegroom
    • Gomer continually pursues her adulterous lovers rather than her faithful prophet husband
    • Gomer’s unfaithfulness mirrors the unfaithfulness of Israel
    • Hosea’s actions throughout the book enact the Amazing Grace of the LORD (1 Peter 1:18)
    • The actions of Gomer should remind us of our own salvation (John 15; Matthew 22) and where our sin places us
    • The actions of Hosea should help us see what Christ does for us
  2. The dangers of unrepented sin
    • The irrationality of sin in the nation of Israel and life of Gomer (raisin cakes / lovers)
    • Sin never provides a good companion and just serves to dull the heart and mind

    • Continued and unrepentant sin leads us further than we ever planned or imagined
    • Gomer’s sin has enslaved her
  3. The cost of Redemption
    • Hosea willingly gives everything he has to redeem Gomer
    • What Christ gives for his people / what our redemption costs him
    • Gomer is fully redeemed, Christ fully redeems his people (Daniel 7; Revelation 20; Galatians 3; Romans 1; Hebrews 10)
