There is a paradox in verse 27 – ‘work’ for that which the Son of Man will ‘give’ you. This prompts a question which Jesus will answer.
- The question above all questions.
- 6:28; Matt.19:16 – the emphasis is on what they can do.
- Acts 2:37; 16:30. Complacency is the great spiritual killer. The former Liberal senator, Amanda Vanstone, said in 2017 that she is a non-believer who lives as best she can by Christian values.
Back in the second century the philosopher, Justin Martyr, records that he went from one philosopher to another and from one philosophy to another – to a Stoic, then an Aristotelean, then a Pythagorean, then a Platonist, and finally an old man who told him about Christ. There his journey ended.
- The answer above all answers.
- 6:29. Jesus directs our attention to the work (singular) of God, not the works (plural) of the people. There is a special Son of Man prophesied by Daniel 7:13-14. See John 1:51; 3:13-14.
- the Son of Man came from heaven to enable sinners to go to heaven (6:35, 41, 50-51). He draws attention to the giving of His flesh and blood – 6:53-54. Eating is believing (6:47; Isa.55:1-3). See Rom.3:28.
Other refuge have I none;
Hangs my helpless soul on Thee
