Psalms 120-134 are referred to as songs of ascents which the ancient Hebrews sang as they made their way to Mount Zion (Jerusalem) for one of the great feasts in the Old Testament calendar (Passover, the Feast of Weeks and the Feast of Booths). Psalm 132 is easily the longest. It deals with God’s promises concerning a place and a person, Zion and the Messianic King.
- David’s suffering for the Lord to dwell in Zion.
- 132:1-5. The account is found in 2 Samuel 7:1-17.
- 132:6-9. Calvin: ‘he descended that we might rise heavenwards’.
- The promise of the Messiah.
- 132:10-12. See 2 Kings 19:32-34.
- Isa.55:3; John 7:40-44; Luke 1:31-33.
- God’s presence in Zion.
- 132:13-18. See 1 Kings 8:27-30. Let us trace this through – Jer.22:30 for Jeconiah. Then the promise in Jeremiah 23:5-6. And its fulfilment – Rev.11:15. The Son of David who is the Lord of David has come to Jerusalem and defeated sin and death. Jerusalem is the centre of the world. From there the message of salvation goes out to the ends of the earth. We need God to come to us. He has. We need a Priest to bring us to God. We have one. We need a King to rule us. We have one. Make sure He is indeed yours.
