Peter Barnes: John 6:62
THE SON OF GOD FROM ETERNITY TO ETERNITY (JOHN 6:62)
We live in times when taking offense has become an entrenched part of the culture. The work of Christ is offensive – 1 Cor.1:23. So too is His the person – John 6:38, 41, 51, 58. Jesus says there is yet more offense – John 6:61-66 – one of Jesus’ ‘How much more’ arguments.
1. Christ in heaven.
– John 3:13, 31; 6:46. What was it like in heaven?
(a) There was glory – John 17:5.
(b) There was communication – John 17:7-8.
(c) There was love – John 17:24.
Sacred Infant, all divine,
What a tender love was Thine,
Thus to come from highest bliss
Down to such a world as this!
2. Christ on earth.
– birth in Luke 2:7; life in Acts 10:38; poverty in Luke 9:58; rejection in John 6:66. This was to save sinners. As the old carol puts it:
Good Christians all rejoice
With heart and soul and voice!
Now you need not fear the grave;
Jesus Christ was born to save.
3. Christ back in heaven.
– John 6:62; see John 3:13; 17:11.
Though an infant now we view Him,
He will share His Father’s throne,
Gather all the nations to Him;
Every knee shall then bow down.
