1 Peter: God’s Pilgrim People in a Hostile World – Christ as the Fulfilment of the Old Testament

Peter Barnes | 1 Peter 1:10-12

SERMON  NOTES
CHRIST AS THE FULFILMENT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
1 Peter 1:10-12

– Luke 24:25-27, 32, 44-45.

1. The Old Testament prophets preached grace.

– 1:10-12. Notice from verse 10 that the Old Testament prophets prophesied grace. John 8:56.

– NIV takes the first word as neuter, and translates it as ‘circumstances’ (hence ‘time and circumstances’); the ESV takes it as masculine, and translates it as ‘person’.

– read Dan.8:15, 27; 10:12; 12:7-9; see Matt.13:16-17.

– 1:12b and Eph.3:8.

2. The Spirit testifies of Christ in both Testaments.

– 1:11. The Spirit of Christ was in the Old Testament prophets (note Rom.8:9; see Phil.1:19; Acts 16:7; Gal.4:6; see Neh.9:30.

– 1:12; the same Spirit was in the apostles. There is a divine mind behind all of Scripture. The Spirit of Christ testifies to Christ.

3. The focus is on the sufferings and the glories of Christ.

– 1:11. Peter got this wrong in Matt.16:15-17, 21-23.

(a) Psalm 22. Ps.22:1-2, 6-8, 12-18; then Ps.22:29-31.

(b) Isaiah 53. Isa.53:1-4; then Isa.53:10-12.

See that pattern in the life of the Christian – Rom.8:17.
