Peter Barnes | Hebrews 2:3a
SERMON NOTES
HOW SHALL WE ESCAPE IF WE NEGLECT SUCH A GREAT SALVATION?
Hebrews 2:3a
– Hebrews uses the word ‘better’ some 13 times. Hence the comparisons as in Heb.9:13-14; 10:28-29.
1. Christ has provided a great salvation.
– this salvation has been wrought by the eternal Son of God who became man – Heb.1:1-4; 2:14-15. His work is perfect – Heb.10:14.
(a) Christ saves from judgment – Heb.9:27-28.
(b) He defeats death – Heb.7:23-25; 2:15.
(c) This is well-attested – Heb.2:4.
(d) This is free – Heb.8:12.
2. The danger of neglecting this salvation.
– Jesus was indeed despised and rejected – Isa.53:3.
– Tim Keller: ‘Sin shrugs at God. Its essence is failing to believe not that he exists but that he matters.’
– Matt.22:1-5 (‘they paid no attention’ or they neglected the invitation). They were not necessarily idol-worshippers, murderers, terrorists, or adulterers.
– Heb. 2:1; 10:25; Rev.2:4-5.
3. This salvation is the only escape for sinners.
– Hebrews 12:25-29 compared to Hebrews 6:18-20.
