SERMON NOTES
NO SIN HIDDEN FROM GOD
2 Samuel 11:14-27
– Calvin: ‘He was as guilty before God as if he were actually carried away by the devil.’
1. Unchecked sin grows.
– 11:14-21. See 1 Samuel 18:25 and Judges 9:50-53.
– David does not confess his sin; he tries to cover it (Prov.28:13). Sin is like quicksand.
– Prov.6:27-29. David has adultery on his conscience, and now blood.
2. Sin sears our consciences.
– 11:22-25. How different is David from the man whose conscience was troubled when he cut the corner of Saul’s robe (1 Sam.24)!
– all is play-acting in 11:25-27a
– yet Psalm 32:3-4. David appears like an unbeliever – Eph.4:17-19. Yet we know that inwardly David was listless and could not concentrate or sleep.
3. The holy God sees all things.
– 11:27b. Note Heb.4:13; 13:4.
– Spurgeon: ‘Remember the shame of sin when tempted by the sweetness of sin.’
No alms, nor deeds that I have done,/ Can for a single sin atone:/ To Calvary alone I flee;/ O God, be merciful to me!
