David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – More Than We Ask or Think

Peter Barnes | 2 Samuel 7:1-11

SERMON  NOTES
MORE THAN WE ASK OR THINK
2 Samuel 7:1-11

Strangely enough, both the kingship (1 Sam.8) and the temple (2 Sam.7) appear to start off as human ideas that God then transforms. It will remind us of God’s promises in Ephesians 3:20-21.

1. Our good intentions may not coincide with God’s will.

– 7:1-2; see 1 Kings 8:17-19.

– 7:3. A godly man can get it wrong.

– there have been wonderful men and women of God who have come up with a plausible and spiritual-sounding idea which obviously failed to attract the blessing of God.

2. God does not dwell in temples.

(a) God does not need a temple to dwell in – 7:4-6; see 1 Kings 8:27; Acts 17:24; John 4:21-24.

(b) God never asked for a temple – 7:7.

(c) David’s shedding of blood – 1 Chron.22:7-8.

Matthew Henry says of David: ‘Better a tent of God’s appointing than a temple of his own inventing.’

3. God makes a house for David.

– 7:8-11. David wanted to build a house (a temple) for God, but instead God would build a house (a dynasty) for David. This is more than David could have asked for or thought.
