2 Samuel 6:13-23

– Ecclesiastes 7:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:19.

1. The joy of the Lord.

– 6:14-15. Calvin: ‘we may find this very strange indeed’, but when J. G. Paton printed his first book in the Tannese language, he was so excited that he danced at 1.00 a.m.

– 6:17-19. David is almost priestly here.

– Ex.15:20-21; Ps.150:1, 4; Acts 2:9-13.

2. Quenching the Spirit.

– Michal was not impressed – 6:16, 20. C. S. Lewis used to cite General Booth’s comment to Rudyard Kipling: ‘Young man, if I could win one soul to God by playing the tambourine with my toes, I’d do it.’

– God disapproves of her proud stance – 6:23.

3. The humility of faith.

– David is not swerved from his joy – 6:21-22. John Wesley: ‘having been all my life (till very lately) so tenacious of every point relating to decency and order, I should have thought the saving of souls almost a sin if it had not been done in a church.’ Then he began to preach in the open air.

– You are handing out tracts, and thinking: ‘Everybody here thinks I am a complete idiot.’ Be encouraged – 1 Cor.4:13; 2 Cor.12:9-10.
