SERMON NOTES
DAVID, THE KING OF ALL ISRAEL
2 Samuel 5
– Gen.49:8-12 to Acts 5:31; yet there is sin (5:13-16; Deut.17:17)
1. The king obtains his kingdom.
– 5:1-5; cf. 1 Chron.12:23-38.
The other tribes acknowledge David as one with them (5:1b), and as their shepherd and prince (5:2). They knew what the Lord said, but they took seven and a half years to obey it!
– this points to Jesus, of the line of David. Jesus was about thirty when He began His public ministry (Luke 3:23). He too is one with our humanity, and is our shepherd and prince.
2. The king obtains his capital.
– 5:6-10. Jerusalem was not yet conquered – Joshua 15:63; Judges 1:21. Jerusalem is 2,500 feet above sea level, and, apart from the north side, it is surrounded by deep valleys.
– David took what became his capital because God was with him – 5:10, 12. Even a Gentile, Hiram of Tyre, helps – 5:11.
– points of a greater Jerusalem – Heb.12:22-24a.
3. The king defeats his enemies.
– 5:17-25. David’s victory is comprehensive; idolatry is crushed for a time.
– points to 1 Cor.15:24-28.
