Peace in a Hostile World
Isaiah 54; John 16:23-33

– Jesus rebukes and comforts His disciples

1. A true confession from weak believers.

– 16:29-30; the disciples know or think they know

– 16:31 – the emphasis is on the ‘now’; the next day they will fall apart (John 16:32; Zech.13:7)

– forsaken yet the Father with Him (Matt.27:46) – still My God

2. Tribulation in the world, peace in Christ.

– 16:33; 14:27; Rom.8:36-37

– Edward Bickersteth: ‘Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?/ Jesus we know, and He is on the throne’.

3. Christ has overcome the world.

– 16:33; see Matt.5:10-12; Neh.8:9-10

– through His death (John 12:31) and His resurrection (1 Cor.15:57)

– to believers (1 John 5:4-5; Rev.12:11; 15:2; 17:14)
