SERMON  NOTES
Encouragement Amidst the Trials (1 Samuel 23:1-29)
1 Samuel 23:1-29

David protects the city of Keilah (23:1-5), then would be betrayed by its inhabitants (23:6-14). Jonathan encourages David (23:15-18), and then God thwarts Saul and the Ziphites (23:19-29).

1. David is guided by the Word.

– 23:1-5. David shows courage and a self-sacrificing spirit, but only acts on God’s Word.

2. David is warned by the Word.

– 23:6-14; extraordinary ingratitude; David saves Keilah, and Keilah betrays David. Recall the ten lepers in Luke 17 – only one is grateful.

– the Knight of the Woeful Countenance in Don Quixote frees some galley slaves who then turn on him.

3. David is encouraged by the Word.

– 23:16-18; Bonhoeffer: ‘The Christian needs another Christian who speak God’s Word to him.’

– see 2 Tim.4:16, 11

4. David is rescued by God’s providence.

– 23:19-29; Saul still speaks like a believer (23:7, 21)

– writes Psalm 54
