The Spirit’s Convicting Work
John 16:4b-15; Acts 2:22-41
1. Jesus’ departure and the Spirit’s coming are for our good.
– 16:4b-6; Peter had asked about Jesus’ departure in John 13:36, but not where.
– 16:7; see John 7:37-39; the Spirit completes the presence of the Son.
2. The Spirit convinces us of sin.
– 16:8-9; ‘convict’ is translated as ‘expose’ in Eph.5:11, 13; the Spirit shows that the world is wrong.
– the sin is not so much murder or highway robbery, but the rejection of the Messiah; John 8:21-24; Acts 2:36-37
3. The Spirit convinces us of righteousness.
– 16:10; see John 18:29-30; 19:7
– the Father reverses the world’s judgment on His Son (e.g. Acts 2:23-24; 3:14-15; 4:10)
4. The Spirit convinces us of judgment.
– 16:11; see John 12:31; 14:30
Convince us of our sin,/ Then lead to Jesus’ blood;/ And to our wondering view reveal/ The secret love of God.
