THE MURDEROUS HEART OF SAUL
1 Samuel 22:6-23
Evil is unleashed.
1. Saul’s murderous heart.
– 22:6-8. Saul is paranoid here, and manipulative.
– he plays the victim and acts the bully (22:11-16)
– even his servants (‘runners’) hesitate to obey him (22:17)
– Henry II on Thomas Becket: ‘Who will rid me of this troublesome priest?’
2. The treachery of the ungodly.
– 21:7; 22:9-10, 18-19; he puts Nob under the ban.
– God uses evil to carry out His just and good will (see 2:31-33; illustrated in the cross in Acts 4:27-28)
3. The regrets of the godly.
– 22:20-23; it goes back to 21:2
– we all have regrets, but the past cannot be re-lived. David does what he can in verse 23
– writes Psalm 52
