Peter Barnes | John 15:18-25

SERMON  NOTES
The Unreasonable Hostility of the World
Psalm 69:1-21; John 15:18-25

– James 4:4; 1 John 2:15; although we are not to initiate this (Rom.12:18)

1. The hatred of the world is inevitable.

– 15:18-21; see John 5:18; 7:7

– Charles Ross: ‘woe to the Church, whenever she loses the heavenly character of being hated and persecuted by a sinful world.’

2. The hatred of the world is culpable.

– 15:22-24; see Matt.11:20-24; Heb.10:28-29

– the more light we are given, the more responsible we are

3. The hatred of the world is unreasonable.

– 15:25; citing Psalm 35:19; 69:4

– it is freely, gratuitously, without cause, like God’s love to His people in Christ (Rom.3:24)

– the unbeliever is calling God a liar (1 John 5:9-11)
