David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – A Man Obsessed

Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 19:1-24

SERMON  NOTES
A Man Obsessed
1 Samuel 19:1-24; Psalm 59

– there are four escape stories in this chapter (vv.1-7, 8-10, 11-17, 18-24)

1. Jonathan’s unselfish love.

– 19:1 – not thinking clearly in announcing this.

– 19:2-7 – Jonathan has most to lose but acts unselfishly to protect David, and seems to succeed.

2. Saul’s murderous outburst.

– 19:8-10; the oath of verse 6 is soon forgotten

– see 18:11; 20:33.

3. Michal’s use of deception.

– 19:11-17; must have lived near the city wall (like Rahab in Josh.2).

– Where did the image (idol) come from? And what about the lie in v.17? The deception is brave and justified, but she goes too far.

4. God renders Saul helpless.

– 19:18-19, Ramah is not far from Gibeah

– 19:20-24 (God’s curse); the reverse of 10:10-13 (God’s blessing)

– God’s role in 19:9, 20, 23
