David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – David and Goliath, part 1

Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 17:1-30

SERMON  NOTES
David and Goliath
1 Samuel 17:1-30; 2 Corinthians 10:1-6

– representative combat; look to David as one who points to Christ but also as our example

1. God’s enemies can appear very imposing.

– 17:4-7, 8-10, 16

– looks frightening and sounds intimidating

2. Faithlessness leads to fear.

– 17:11, 24-25; the promises of Saul are not enough

– nor does Israel listen to God’s promises of Ex.23:22; Deut.3:22; 20:1-4

– 1 John 4:4 is there for us.

3. God uses unlikely instruments who trust Him.

– 17:12-24, 26; see Prov.28:1

John Bunyan: ‘No lion can him fright,/ He’ll with a giant fight,/ But he will have a right/ To be a pilgrim.’

4. We are to expect persecution from without and undermining from within.

– 17:28; se 1 John 3:11-12; John 15:25
