David and the Kingly Line of the Messiah – Temporary Peace

Peter Barnes | 1 Samuel 16:14-23

SERMON  NOTES
Temporary Peace
1 Samuel 16:14-23; Hebrews 6:1-12

– David  comes  into  Saul’s  court

1. We  can  experience  the  Holy  Spirit  without  being  saved.

– 16:14a;  a  little  like  Samson  in  Judges 16:20  except  that  Samson  is  saved  (Heb.11:32)

– Luke 11:24-26;  Heb.6:4-6

– behind  David’s  prayer  in  Ps.51:11;  God  gives  some  over  to  evil  (Rom.1:24, 26, 28)

2. God  is  sovereign  over  evil.

– 16:14b;  like  Abimelech  in  Judges 9:5-6, 22-23, 52-54  and  Ahab  in  1 Kings 22:19-23

– Prov.16:4

3.  A  help  is  not  necessarily  a  solution.

– 16:15-23;  see  2 Sam.23:1

(a)  these  have  some  uses  e.g.  distraction  techniques  in  child  discipline;  breathing  techniques  in  panic  attacks;  deep  breaths  to  control  anger

(b)  but  the  key  thing  is  repentance  (Prov.28:13;  see  too  Rom.5:1-2, 5)

Music  is  one  of  God’s  gifts  but  it  did  not  put  Saul  right  with  God.
