Peter Barnes | John 14:18-20
SERMON NOTES
THE COMINGS OF JESUS
(Psalm 73:1-28; John 14:15-24)
Jesus gives a series of promises: ‘I will’.
1. We are promised comfort.
– 14:18; the KJV has ‘comfortless’ but the word is ‘orphans’, like Oliver Twist
– could refer to the coming of the Spirit (William Hendriksen) or the Second Coming (J. C. Ryle), but it fits the resurrection best (Don Carson)
– see Luke 24:17, 21, 25-27 for an illustration
2. We are promised life.
– 14:19; this seems more obviously the resurrection of Christ
– What hope do we have of life after the grave? Only through Christ.
3. We are promised a knowledge of Christ and His presence.
– 14:20; there are two parts here:
(a) the resurrection shows that Jesus is in the Father
(b) it shows that the Christian is in Christ (2 Cor.5:17) and Christ is in the Christian (Col.1:27)
