Peter Barnes | John 14:7-11
SERMON NOTES
SEEING THE FATHER IN THE SON
Exodus 33:12-23; John 14:7-11
What is God like?
1. The Son fully reveals the Father.
– 14:7-8; Philip is asking for what Moses asked for (Ex.33:17-20)
– 14:9; Jesus is exactly like the Father (see Col. 1:15a; 2:9; 2 Cor.4:4; Heb.1:3)
Martin Luther: ‘You shall look to this man and say that He is God.’
2. Jesus’ words are the Father’s words.
– 14:10b; note John 10:30, 38; 12:49
– what Jesus says (His invitations, His words of comfort, His warnings) are what the Father says.
3. Jesus’ works are the Father’s works.
– 14:10-11 (the NIV has ‘miracles’ but it is ‘works’)
– John 5:36; 17:4; compare to Mark 3:22
What is God like? What does He say? What has He done? The answer is in Christ.
