Peter Barnes | John 13:36-38
SERMON NOTES
KNOWING OURSELVES
John 13:31-38; 18:15-27
– Jer.17:9 is foundational for understanding ourselves
1. We are ignorant of the depths of our own sin.
– 13:36-38; Peter’s question is the first of four from the disciples (14:5, 8, 22)
– not unlike Matt.16:15-17, 21-23.
– almost parodies what Jesus does (John 10:11, 15, 18); Peter would die for Jesus (John 21:18-19)
– wait in Ps.37:7; Isa.40:31; note 1 Cor.10:12; Andrew Bonar at 78: ‘Imperfection stamped on everything I ever undertook’.
2. Christ knows us through and through.
– Peter doesn’t know himself but Christ knows us all (cf. John 2:23-25; 3:2-3; 4:16-19; 66, 64-65)
– His judgment is certain (John 5:27-29)
3. Christ restores His people.
– He prays (Luke 22:31-32) and recommissions (John 21:15-17)
– Prov.28:26a and 2 Cor.12:10; hence 1 Cor.1:30-31.
