Peter Barnes | Psalm 34:15-22
SERMON NOTES
THE LORD IS NEAR TO THE BROKENHEARTED
Psalm 34:15-22
– for context, see 1 Samuel 21.
1. God delivers the brokenhearted righteous.
– 34:15-18; see Ps.51:17; Isa.61:1
– not deliverance from afflictions (see 34:19)
– Bernard Gilpin was saved in 1558 because he broke a leg! Mary Tudor died before his leg healed enough for him to be burnt at the stake.
2. Christ fulfils this first for His people.
– 34:20; see Ex.12:46 and John 19:36
– Jesus fulfils the Psalms for His people
– Psalm 16:10 is another obvious example
3. God redeems His people forever.
– 34:21-22; ‘evil will slay the wicked’; Spurgeon: ‘God makes the viper poison itself.’
– the Lord redeems those who take refuge in Him from a wicked and hostile world.
