Peter Barnes | John 13:31-33
SERMON NOTES
A STRANGE GLORY
Psalm 24:1-10; John 13:31-33
– glory on the cross?
1. The glory of the Son of Man and God is certain.
– 13:31. In the Greek, it is the aorist tense, or past tense.
– like John 17:4; Romans 8:29-30; hence Ps.46:1-3. Christ is telling His disciples the glory must take place.
2. This glory is seen in the cross.
– 13:31-32. Who can understand all this? See John 12:23.
– Glory is heaven; it signifies the blessed presence of God – John 17:5; Ps.24:7-10; distress and glory – John 12:27-28.
(a) The cross glorifies the faithfulness of God. Genesis 3:15; Isa.53:6.
(b) The cross glorifies the justice of God. Gal.3:10, 13.
(c) The cross glorifies the mercy of God. Rom.3:26.
– Gal.6:14; 1 Cor.1:23-24.
3. Christ must achieve this glory by Himself.
– 13:33; same words but different idea in John 7:33-4; 8:21. To the unbeliever, ‘where I am going you cannot come’ is terrible news. To the believer, Christ is saying He will go alone to the cross.
