Peter Barnes | John 13:21-30
SERMON NOTES
AND IT WAS NIGHT
Psalm 55; John 13:21-30
– this is the power of darkness (Luke 22:53)
1. Jesus in distress and in control.
– 13:19, 21 – the two things are true together
– trouble or agitation – same word in John 5:7; 11:33; 12:27; this is what salvation cost the Son of God.
2. Judas had every privilege yet was apostate.
– 13:21-30; see Matt.10:1, 7-8
– he was an eyewitness and a miracle worker, yet Satan entered him while he was a few metres from Christ
3. There are limits as to our spiritual knowledge.
– the other eleven do not pick who is the betrayer, even after Jesus is quite specific in word and deed
– we can judge beliefs (e.g. 1 John 4:2) and behaviour (Matt.7:15-16) but can go no further; Judas never prays Psalm 139:23-24
– two more meetings: in the garden (Matt.26:49-5) and at the judgment
