SERMON NOTES
WHO CAN ENDURE THE DAY OF THE LORD?
Joel 2:1-11
Five times Joel speaks of a coming ‘Day of the Lord’ (1:15; 2:1, 11, 31; 3:14); see e.g. Heb.10:25.
1. God gives us clear and urgent warnings.
– 2:1-10; for v.10 see Isa.13:13.
– the Bible is clear in its warnings; see Matt.3:1; 4:17; 1 Cor.14:8.
– the NKJV writes of God’s rising early to send the prophets to preach to Israel (Jer. 7:25; 26:5; 29:19; 35:15; 44:4).
2. God will act against sinners.
– 2:11; it is God’s army against Israel, as in Jer.25:9.
3. Who can endure the day of the Lord?
– 2:11b; Ps.130:3.
– Rev.6:12-17. Who can stand? Not the strong man, not the moral man, not the Pharisee, not the atheist, not the intelligent man, not the popular man. Only the sinner clothed in the righteousness of Christ.
