Peter Barnes | Psalm 18:1-19
SERMON NOTES
GOD WINS THE WAR FOR HIS PEOPLE (part 1)
Psalm 18
– only Psalm 78 and 119 are longer; very similar to 2 Samuel 22.
1. God is our rock.
– 18:1-3; see Deut.32:4, 18; Gen.15:1; ‘A mighty fortress is our God’ (Luther).
– we are weak but the Lord is strong (2 Cor.12:9).
2. God answers prayer.
– 18:4-6; Hannah More on prayer: ‘it is the cry of faith to the ear of mercy’.
– Spurgeon tells of his own experience in 1856 when seven people died in the Surrey Gardens Music Hall tragedy, and Spurgeon was so downcast he felt he could die, until Philippians 2:9-11 sunk in. He comments that these verses from Psalm 18 describe his experience.
3. The God of the Exodus still delivers today.
– 18:7-15 harks back to the deliverance of the Red Sea and the appearance at Mount Sinai
– yet it may be describing 1 Sam.23:24b-29; God delivers in Psalm 18:16-19
