Peter Barnes | Jeremiah 52
SERMON NOTES
THE DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM, AND YET HOPE
Jeremiah 52
– last words of Jeremiah in 51:64; Jer. 52 is possibly from Baruch; almost the same as 2 Kings 24:18-25:30.
1. God’s promises seem to be undone.
(a) the Davidic kingship is virtually destroyed (52:7-11; see 2 Sam.7:14-16). No king, no Messiah.
(b) the temple was destroyed (52:13; compare to 2 Chron.7:1-3). No temple, no sacrifices for sin.
(c) the people are, for the most part, either killed or exiled. Genesis 12:1-3 is reversed (52:24-30). Jeremiah 52 seems to be only referring to adult males. No growing people and no great nation blessed as the Promised Land.
2. God’s anger against His people.
– 52:3. That is clear. This is not like Job where the righteous man suffers. This is punishment because God is holy. Ezek.18:4.
3. A glimmer of light.
– 52:31-34. Jehoiachin reigned for about three months in 597 B.C., then imprisoned in Babylon for 37 years, then released.
– Matt.1:12-16. Amidst the rubble, a glimmer of light.
