Peter Barnes | 2 Samuel 11
SERMON NOTES
OVERCOME BY THE FLESH
(2 Samuel 11)
– Calvin says this should make our hair stand on end; it is the man after God’s own heart who falls (Acts 13:22).
1. Sin begins in the heart.
– 11:1-5; he probably should have been with his troops; he should have looked away; and he should not have called for her
– he would have known Uriah (2 Sam.23:39; 1 Chron.11:41)
– Matt.5:29-30; James 1:14-15; 1 Cor.6:18
– 1 Cor.10:12; Psalm 139:23-24
2. Without repentance, sin just entangles us.
– 11:6-27a; two options in Prov.28:13
– verse 25 reeks of falsehood
– it affects David (Ps.32:3-4)
3. The holy God sees all things.
– 11:27b; Heb.4:13
No alms, nor deeds that I have done,
Can for a single sin atone:
To Calvary alone I flee;
O God, be merciful to me!
