SERMON NOTES
PRAYER FOR THE APOSTLE
(Romans 15:30-33)
– note his emphasis on prayer in 1:8-10; 10:1.
1. We are to strive humbly in prayer.
– 15:30; see Col. 4:2-3; 1 Thess.5:25; 2 Thess.3:1
– prayer is vigorous – see Gen.32:24-30; Isa.65:7; Col.2:1; 4:12; not a quiet time!
2. Prayer for protection and acceptance.
– 15:31
(a) that he would be delivered from unbelievers in Judea. See Acts 21:31-33; 23:12-13. A contrast to Ignatius of Antioch who was in love with being martyred.
(b) that the collection would be accepted by Jewish Christians. See Acts 21:17-25 for tensions.
3. God’s answer and our hopes.
– 15:32; see Acts 18:19-21 for Ephesus
– the prayer was answered but with many surprises, including two years in prison – hence Phil.1:12
