Peter Barnes | Jeremiah 15:15-21
SERMON NOTES
LONELY BECAUSE OF THE WORD
Jeremiah 15:10-21; 2 Timothy 3:10-17
1. We must love God’s Word.
-15:16; Ezek.3:1-3; Ps.1:2; 119:103
– it is meant to be read, digested, trusted, and obeyed.
2. We must be prepared to face isolation.
– 15:15, 17; see 15:10; also no family (16:1-2), unlike Isaiah (Isa.8:3)
– Ps.69:12; 1 Pet.4:3-4
– Genevans named their dogs ‘Calvin’; Whitefield as ‘Dr Squintum’; Spurgeon as an ape in the media
– Jeremiah’s lament to God (15:18a)
3. We must repent of self-pity.
– 15:18b; this crosses the line, which the Psalmist almost did (see Ps.73:1-3, 15)
– 15:19-21; God calls on Jeremiah to repent
– nothing new but a repeat of God’s promises back in 1:18-19
