Peter Barnes | John 21:24-25
SERMON NOTES
A TRUE WITNESS
John 21:24-25
John has somewhat odd conclusions e.g. 1 John 5:13, 21
1. John’s account is part of a trustworthy book.
– 21:24; the Bible was written down as God gave it down through the ages (Gen.5:1; Ex.24:4; Isa.30:8; Hab.2:2)
– Galatians was written in A.D. 48 or 49; a Gospel must have be written earlier
– the written message is true (e.g. 1 Cor.15:12-19)
2. John is an eyewitness.
– 21:24; see John 1:14 (‘we beheld’); 19:35; 1 John 1:1-3
– we are not eyewitnesses but neither are Richard Dawkins and Bart Ehrman
3. The Bible is sufficient but incomplete.
– 21:25; this is hyperbole in one sense like Deut.1:28; Josh.5:6; 7:12
– the Bible is sufficient (e.g. 2 Tim.3:15-17) but it does not contain everything that we will know (e.g. 1 Cor.13:12)
– we barely scratch the surface but it is enough
