SERMON NOTES
MOCKERY, BLASPHEMY OR FEAR?
John 19:1-11
1. Roman soldiers mock the King.
– 19:2-3; see earlier references to Jesus as king in John 6:15; 12:12-13; 18:33-36
– they think Jesus is claiming to be another Tiberius in Rome
– Gal.6:7
2. Jewish authorities accuse Him of blasphemy.
– 19:6-7; note John 18:31; referring back to Lev.24:16
– John 5:18; either this is rank madness or high truth; there is nothing in between.
3. The Roman governor fears to do right.
– 19:1, 4-5; Pilate is actually trying to save Jesus (19:12)
– 19:7-9, 10-11a
– Pilate did not learn what Nebuchadnezzar did (Dan. 4:34-35)
– Pilate is all bluff and false strength; see Rom.5:6
