THE WEEPING PROPHET
Luke 19:41-48; Jeremiah 8:18-9:11
– Jeremiah is deeply moved (8:18, 21; 9:1, 10)
1. Jeremiah mourns for the condition of Zion.
– 9:9-11; very different from Ps.48:1-3
– 8:21; Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s poem The Death of Moses:
To punish sin and to forgiveness you are moved,
God, this people I have loved.
That I bore its shame and sacrifices
And saw its salvation – that suffices.
2. Jeremiah mourns for the sins of Zion.
– 8:19; 9:3-6; social breakdown
3. Jeremiah mourns for the affront to God.
– 8:19-20 – not saved; 9:3, 6 – did not know God and refused to know God
– 2 Cor.12:21; Phil.3:18; Luke 19:41-44
– 8:22; yes, there is – see Rev.22:2
There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead, to heal the sin-sick soul.
Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain;
But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.
