THE PURPOSE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
(Romans 15:4)
– Paul is explaining how he can appeal to Ps.69:9 in Rom.15:3.
1. The Old Testament is for instruction.
– 1 Cor.10:11; Paul expected the Greek Corinthians to know Numbers 25
2. The Old Testament is for endurance.
– or ‘patience’; connected both ways to hope in Rom. 5:3-5 and 1 Thess.1:3
– 1 Cor.11:34 – be patient
3. The Old Testament is for encouragement.
– same word as for comfort, consolation and exhortation.
– Habakkuk 2:3
4. The Old Testament is for hope
– this is the hope of glory; see Rom.15:12-13
– all of this helps the strong to carry the weak.
