SERMON NOTES
PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT
Isaiah 14:3-23; Matthew 11:20-24
– David Dickson: ‘Abused means of grace, if they prevail not to true conversion, do bring a man deeper in the state of condemnation.’
1. Clear evidence is presented.
– 11:20; most of the miracles in Chorazin, Bethsaida (see John 1:44; Luke 9:10-17) and Capernaum (see Matt.9:1).
– they saw, heard and touched the Messiah (not unlike 1 John 1:1-3 in many ways)
2. People fail to repent.
– 11:20-21; see Matt.3:2; 4:17
– Luke 13:3
3. The greater light rejected, the greater judgment incurred.
– 11:21-24; Capernaum, for example, is condemned like ancient Babylon (Isa.14:13-15)
– degrees of punishment in hell (Luke 12:47-48). Spurgeon: ‘Those who perish with salvation sounding in their ears perish with a vengeance.’
